Barcelona
is the second largest city which is also the capital city of Catalonia in Spain
with a population of 1.6 million. The name Barcelona came from the ancient
Liberian Phoenician, Barkeno and in
Latin, Barcino, Barcilonum and Barcenona.
Spain,
particularly Barcelona, is word renowned for its architecture and art. It has
become the home of the most famous furniture designers in the world. Some of
the most popular icons in the furniture design industry are recognized because
ot the ingenuity, elegance and uniqueness of their creations.
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was born in March 27, 1886. He is the biggest name in the twentieth
century designs. He is a well known architect. He became the Director of
Architecture at the Bauhaus Design School and one of the founders of the architectural
association Der Ring. He was the one who first introduced modernist
architecture in Europe. His most famous furniture designs are the Barcelona
chair and the Brno Chair.
Achille Castiglioni was born in February 1918 in Milan. He studied architecture at Milan
Polytechnic and with his so called rare talent he was able to design commercial
products such as cutlery sets in 1938. Because of their quirky, intelligent and original
products, Achille
Castiglioni and his brothers created design
classics that are still available in the market. One of his most famous creations
is the Arco Lamp. He won countless design awards and is known to be one of the greatest
industrial designers of the 20th century.
Charles and Ray Eames, because of their “mid century modern” style of furniture,
were known to be two of the most famous and highly-respected designers of the twentieth
century. They designed the “Eame’s Moulded Plywood Chair” which was coined as “the chair of the century.” And their
creations became known to the whole world until the present time.
Isamu Noguchi is a prominent Japanese American artist and land architect. He is a world-renowned
fine artist for his beautiful furniture designs. In the 1940s, he was
recognized because of his “biomorphic designs” and became famous in the New
York Art World. He was recruited by Knoll and Herman Miller to make use of his
artist’s eye to design a line of furniture and lamps. The Noguchi Style
Coffee Table was created and became a timeless work of art in the furniture
industry.
